DAMON ALBARN (singer with BLUR/GORILLAZ) and the Lebanese/Syrian rapper Eslam Jawaad are busy working with producer Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) on a new project "The Good, The Bad and the Queen". An album release has been scheduled for 2007 but in October they will be releasing the single "Herculean" on CD and 7" vinyl (EMI). However, you will have to be quick as it will then be deleted on the same day!

It looks like BJÖRK and THE SUGAR CUBES will take to the stage for the first time in 14 years to coincide with the 20th anniversary of their single "Birthday". On 17th November they will be performing a one off gig in Reykjavik.
SHIT DISCO release their new single "Reactor Party" (Fierce Panda Records) on 23rd October. You can have a listen and find out how to order a copy by going via the AAPA MySpace section.
NEW BANDS: We have 3 new bands who we think are worth checking out!
First up are BLOOD RED SHOES who are described as a Punk - Grunge - Disco House collaboration from Brighton. They are set to play about 35 gigs over in the UK between September and November. Their recent single (on 7" vinyl) "ADHD" is out now and available from good record shops, while they have a new single "You Bring Me Down" out in November. It has been reported that P!ATD and Kaiser Chiefs are fans of the band. There is also a new Manchester band called BAUER who are hotly tipped to do well at the forthcoming IN THE CITY international music convention at the end of October (go to: http://www.inthecity.co.uk/index.php for more info on this annual event). Then we have ELEKTRADOG who should appeal to fans of early 80`s electro bands like Depeche Mode and Human League or Gary Numan, but also with the song "Can't Stop Dancing" which has elements of T.Rex should therefore also appeal to the new generation.
For more info on all new bands then go to our NEW BANDS section - > HERE

NEW RELEASES: On 25th September LARRIKIN LOVE will be releasing their debut album "The Freedom Spark", while LLOYD COLE releases his new album "Anti Depressant". Then on 23rd October GOLDFRAPP will be releasing their re-mix album "We Are Glitter".
COMING SOON - What is wrong with the music scene in Holland? - > HERE

The brand new album by BABY BIRD will be released in the UK on 25th September, while in Belgium (& hopefully NL) it will be released a week later on 2nd October. "between my ears there's nothing but music" will be available on Chrysalis Records and they will be playing several live dates over in the UK (listen to some songs and get all the latest info on them through the links at the AAPA MySpace section HERE). However, there does appear to be some confusion as to the actual track listing on the album. Depending on who you listen to one version was reported to have it as: 1. Snails, 2. Jesus said go, 3. Waiting, 4. Happy ugly man, 5. I had a dream about me, 6. Ida(ho), 7. Travel sickness, 8. My little shop on a cloud, 9. Idle hand, 10. Endless sidewalks, 11. Tall midget, 12. Between my ears. A different source claims that it is going to be: 1. Between My Ears , 2. There's Nothing But Music, 3. Too Much, 4. Dive, 5. Snails, 6. Old Skin, 7. Little Things, 8. 70, 9. Lighter 'N' Spoon, 10. Divorce Song, 11. Shoutabout, 12. Better Than Love, 13. Beautiful Place. I suppose we shall all know by the end of this month?

Having just completed his 70 date world tour MORRISSEY has revealed that his future plans could involve working with legendary composer ENNIO MORRICONE again. On the True To You website he wrote "I am excited to be asked by Morricone (yes, Morricone) to sing and supply words for one of his musical pieces with a view to presenting this song at Carnegie Hall. Joy, joy, joy." - Earlier this year Ennio Morricone had collaborated with Morrissey on his critically acclaimed album "Ringleader of the Tormentors" (Attack/Sanctuary Records), while in the past Morricone had rejected similar requests from the likes of U2.
So it looks like the former lead singer of The Smiths and the maestro both share good taste then!
CAMERA OBSCURA, a highly rated 6-piece indie pop band from Scotland and favourite of the late John Peel, have a new single out. "Let's Get Out Of This Country" was released on 11th September and is taken from the album by the same name.
The band are also due to make a live appearance at a festival in Rotterdam on Saturday 30th September. Both single and album are available in Europe through Elefant Records. For more info and a listen go through the AAPA MySpace link HERE, or you can get details of ordering these releases by going to their record label at: http://www.elefant.com/en/novedades.php.

It looks like SMASHING PUMPKINS are currently recording their first new album since 1999 with Roy Thomas Baker. Back in the 70`s Baker was responsible for producing QUEEN - The release date is not yet known but will hopefully be sometime in 2007.
WEBSITE CHANGE - We have decided to split up the gig reviews and set up a special section for all the live reviews by Dutch bands - The direct link can be found HERE. For all reviews by international artists go to REVIEWS - > CONCERTS/GIGS

Due to unforeseen circumstances BAT FOR LASHES will now not be appearing at this years Bazar Curieux Festival in Rotterdam on Saturday 16th September. It is hoped that they will reschedule their live dates to November (so keep checking the GIGS listings).
Their debut album "Fur and Gold" (She Bear/Echo Records) is out on Monday (11th September)

NEW RELEASES: On 2nd October BECK will be releasing his new album "The Information", and BADLY DRAWN BOY releases his new album "Born In The UK" on 23rd October, while AIMEE MANN is set to release her latest album "One More Drifter In The Snow" on 30th October.

On 2nd October DEPECHE MODE will be releasing remastered versions of 3 of their albums - "Songs of Faith and Devotion", "A Broken Frame & "Some Great Reward" will be released on Mute Records and will all include bonus DVD`s.
Then on 13th November they will also be releasing a new "Best of" album.

Last night (5th September) ARCTIC MONKEYS won the prestigious annual Mercury Music Prize for Best Album. The Sheffield band had been favourites to win the prize for their debut album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" after the 12 nominees were announced in July, but the Mercury judges have often bypassed favourites to honour less obvious candidates, notably Antony and the Johnsons last year.
This years MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE nominees also included:
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - "Ballad Of The Broken Seas"
Editors - "The Back Room"
Richard Hawley - "Coles Corner"
Guillemots - Through The Windowpane
Hot Chip - "The Warning"
Muse - "Black Holes And Revelations"
Lou Rhodes - "Beloved One"
Thom Yorke - "The Eraser"

We have just found out that although the excellent debut album by CAPTAIN was released across Europe on 14th August it is for some bizarre reason not being released in Holland until mid October! - What`s all that about?!?!
AUGUST

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO is to release a new album. He won the Academy Award for his score to the 1987 Bernardo Bertolucci film "The Last Emperor", and was also responsible for the critically acclaimed soundtracks to "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" (1983) - where he also played a leading role, and Bertolucci`s "The Sheltering Sky" (1990). Ryuichi Sakamoto has previously also collaborated with David Byrne (Talking Heads) & David Sylvian (Japan) and released a fantastic compilation album of his work in 2000 with "Cinemage" (Sony). There was also a compilation album - "Best of Ryuichi Sakamoto: Soundtracks" - with 17 tracks that was released in 2004 by Toshiba EMI Japan but unfortunately it is only available as an import. His new album "Bricolages" (Warners) is set for release on 16th October.

A lot of bands, including WE ARE SCIENTISTS, KAISER CHIEFS, LITTLE MAN TATE, BADLY DRAWN BOY and MARIANNE FAITHFULL have all just announced live dates in Holland for later this year. We earlier announced (see below) forthcoming gigs by PLACEBO and MUSE.
The concert by PANIC! AT THE DISCO on 19th October in Amsterdam has since sold out. For more info go to our GIGS section.
How can you possibly summarize a trip to the EDINBURGH FESTIVAL when in the space of a few weeks you get to discover some cool new bands, attend a film premiere, go to some good (and not so good) comedy shows, go to great gigs (and get thrown out of one before it even started for smoking!), have your seat to a sold out show nicked at the last minute by none other than Sean Connery, attend some brilliant shows, go for drinks with the former Drum Major of The Black Watch Pipes & Drums, bump into Radiohead singer Thom Yorke and discover some great (and appalling) bars & restaurants?! ... "full review" of our trip to the Edinburgh Festival can be found - > HERE!

THE PIPETTES are to release a new single on 25th September - "Judy" is taken from their debut album "We Are The Pipettes" and will be available on the Memphis Industries label. They will also be making their live debut in Holland in October when they play 4 dates (go to GIG LISTINGS for more info on their European Tour)

A new band from Glasgow worth checking out are THE DYKEENIES who released their debut single "New Ideas" on 17th July. They have been compared by some people to THE KILLERS, or with their use of choppy catchy power poppy guitar riffs by other people to THE FUTUREHEADS. You can have a listen by going through our MySpace area. The single is available through the King Tuts label.
As from 12th August the majority of us are either off on our holidays, going to the EDINBURGH FESTIVAL while some of us will be going to the LOWLANDS FESTIVAL - we will post all our reviews once we get back in around 2 weeks time.

iLiKETRAiNS have added a second date in Holland when they tour across Europe in September, along with more dates in Germany, Belgium (Brussels) & France. For more info go to our Gigs & Festivals info section - > HERE. The band from Leeds who released the critically acclaimed mini album "Progress Reform" on the Fierce Panda label back in June have been described by some sectors of the press as sounding like Nick Cave`s Murder Ballads mixed in with Mogwai and the best bits from the last 2 albums by Sigur Rós ... Their recent single "Terra Nova" was featured in our monthly playlist for July and they are currently receiving great gig reviews while on tour and appearing at festivals over in the UK. Definitely a band to watch out for... You can listen to some of their tracks by going through AAPA to their own MySpace site HERE.

CARTER USM have brought out a new album containing unreleased and rare material - "The Good, The Bad, The Average And Unique (A Collection Of Besides)' is available from their online shop at: http://www.carterusm.co.uk/ - CARTER USM were one of the main indie bands in the early to mid 90`s. Their singer Jim Bob also has his new solo album "School" out. It has just been announced the next LONDON CALLING event in Amsterdam (showcase for new and upcoming UK bands) will be in November - see the AAPA tip on how we think this event can be improved!

The ARCTIC MONKEYS are favourites to win the 2006 Mercury Music Prize after the shortlist was revealed in London. Their nominated album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" became the fastest-selling debut when it was released in January. Past winners have included Franz Ferdinand, PJ Harvey & Pulp. The other nominations for 2006 include Muse, Editors, Richard Hawley, Hot Chip, Isobel Campbell, Radiohead singer Thom Yorke and Lou Rhodes (LAMB). The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on 5th September.
It has been said on more than one occasion that the EDINBURGH Festival is the biggest and most impressive annual arts festival in the world, where during 3 weeks in August the city plays host to the best new comedy and theatre, the international film festival, along with art and photography exhibitions, a book festival and of course music from all over the world. During this years FRINGE FESTIVAL a load of upcoming and cool bands will also be appearing across 3 venues (Corn Exchange, Liquid Room & Cabaret Voltaire) in the city centre throughout the 3 weeks that the festival takes place and which then finishes with an outdoor gig by BELLE & SEBASTIAN on 27th August in Princes Street Gardens. So if you are planning a trip over to the UK in August then make sure you get yourselves up to Edinburgh. For more detailed info you can go to www.tonthefringe.com for full listings. Our tips include THE FRATELLIS on 17th August, BABY BIRD on 19th (more info below about his brand new album under Latest News - May), both EDITORS and CAPTAIN on the 21st at different venues (so a difficult decision has to be made there!), The DEAD 60`s on 23rd, MAXIMO PARK and SHIT DISCO share the same venue on 24th and THE SUBWAYS on the 27th August.

THOM YORKE (Radiohead) is to release his first solo single in August. 'Harrowdown Hill' will be the first track to be lifted from his debut solo LP 'The Eraser', which came out on Monday (July 10th) on XL Recordings. The 12" release will have an extended version of what is probably the most controversial track on his debut album.
BASEMENT JAXX are to release a new studio album in the autumn. 'Crazy Itch Radio' is out on 4th September and is the follow-up to 2004's 'Greatest Hits' compilation and their first studio LP since 2003. The album will be preceded by a single, 'Hush Boy', which is out on 28th August.

THE KILLERS are set to release their new album ('Sam's Town') on 2nd October which will be preceded by the single 'When You Were Young'. When asked about their new album back in January, singer Brandon Flowers was quoted as saying "I admire bands like the Talking Heads for having hits that are still pop and rock, but out of the norm" and "I want to get a producer who will mess with the parts, somebody with different ideas on how to arrange it. We've already proven that we can write a perfect pop song...". Since then he has also suggested that their new album would be "the best album of the last 20 years" - So as you can imagine with all this build up we were a wee bit surprised on listening to their next single 'When You Were Young' (out on 18th September) that it sounds alarmingly similar to bloody MEATLOAF!?!
NEW RELEASES: On 10th July, THE MOTORETTES & KUBICHEK! are to release a joint single on Kitchenware Records, with each band presenting one of their own songs, and a cover of one of the others, while ?Opening Shot? by KUBICHEK! is featured in the (AAPA PLAYLIST) for July. We also hear that the ARCTIC MONKEYS next single will be 'Leave Before The Lights Come On' (Domino Records) and will be released on 14th August, while THE FUTUREHEADS will be releasing 'Worry About It Later' (679 Recordings), which is the 2nd single to be taken from their album "News And Tributes", and is out on 7th August.

ELECTRONIC (Johnny Marr from THE SMITHS & Bernard Sumner from NEW ORDER) will be releasing their "Best of" album this summer (on Rhino Records). Their first, self titled album was released in 1991 on Factory Records, which included the indie hits "Getting Away With It," "Get the Message," "Tighten Up," and "Feel Every Beat." .... they went on to release 2 more albums.
RAZORLIGHT are back. The band who gave us the excellent single "Somewhere Else" last year and a decent debut album (in 2004) are set to release their second album on Mercury Records on 17th July. This will be preceded by the single "In The Morning" but on first listen this sounds like they have ripped off Talking Heads?! Our advice: stick with the original and look forward to "Road To Nowhere" or another classic song by Talking Heads in a future AAPA play-list instead!

Back in the early 80`s A CERTAIN RATIO were putting out albums on the now legendary Factory Records and over the past 20 odd years they have had a notable impact on the alternative music scene without being in the spotlight themselves. Apart from doing gigs over in the states with NEW ORDER in the 80`s they also had someone called Madonna support them in NYC, by the 90`s they had gone onto work with the likes of Norman Cook (Fat Boy Slim), Denise Johnson and M People, while DJs like Andy Weatherall were constantly quoting them as a major influence. Then in recent years they've released new material with the Fila Brazillia people and were involved with the film about Factory Records - "24 Hour Party People". All in all a rather impressive CV... In July they will be playing 2 gigs in the Benelux:
On 1st July ACR appear at Antwerpen 5voor12 club and on the 2nd July at the Amsterdam Paradiso (kleine zaal)
For more info on ACR then go to http://www.acrmcr.com/biography.html

Monday 22nd May 2006: was pleasantly surprised to catch a live studio performance by former indie favourites SUEDE last night until I realized that it was part of a BBC comedy show (This Is Dom Joly) which was being broadcasted for the first time on Dutch television (NL3)?! - In it SUEDE performed 2 songs ("Trash" & "Astro Girl") to promote their new singles album (Nude Records) but the only problem here is that this album came out in 2003 ... better late than never I suppose!?!

16th May 2006: Due to phenomenal demand INSPIRAL CARPETS have had to add a second date to their Tokyo Project event in Oldham (GB) in June. They will now play for 2 consecutive nights on Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th June. More info can be found below...

Inspiral Carpets shot to the forefront of the alternative music scene in the late 80`s, became one of John Peel`s favourite bands and went onto deliver a bucket load of hit indie singles and 4 great albums, of which "Revenge of the Goldfish" (1993) is still seen today as one of the most influential alternative albums of the 90`s. See link

THE CONCRETES come from Sweden and their new album "Concretes in Colour" is available on the Licking Fingers label. The Concretes previous self titled album from 2004 is available on EMI REcords.

Question 1 - When and where did MORRISSEY last appear on stage in The Netherlands?
Question 2 - Who sang the vocals when THE SMITHS made their first ever live appearance on the UK`s Top of the Pops?
(extra points in the event of a tie-break if you can also name the actual single?)
Question 3 - On his brand new album "Ringleader of The Tormentors" which famous composer also made a contribution?

Today (13th March) sees the release of a lot of new albums and singles: MASSIVE ATTACK have a brand new single out called "Live With Me" (Virgin Records), while NINE BLACK ALPS release "Glitter Gulch" (Island Records). Then "No Way Back" / Cold Day In The Sun" is the new double A sided single by FOO FIGHTERS, GRAHAM COXON (ex - BLUR) has a new album out and BATTLE release their single "Tendency" on Transgressive Records.

DEPECHE MODE have announced that they have a brand new single out the day after they play their sell out gig at the Rotterdam Ahoy on Sunday 26th March - "suffer well" will be the third song to be taken from their album "Playing the Angel" (Mute Records) - The video for the single has been made by Dutch artist and photographer ANTON CORBIJN. We have to admit to being a bit surprised by this choice of single, and can only conclude that they must be keeping the dark ballad "nothing`s impossible" or better still the stomping "Lilian" in reserve? - DM`s "Playing the Angel" was AAPA`s album of the year for 2005. Go to MUSIC -> "2005 ... a year of music" for full list of nominations and winners.

Believe it or not but it is exactly 30 years ago this week that PUNK hit the streets of the UK with cities like London and Manchester reeling under the impact of a new youth culture! It would be years later that certain European and North American locations would finally catch on despite what they try and tell you now, and then in the 90`s MTV gave the world their updated version ... thanks!

AMBULANCE LTD. are hard at work on their second album and have a new EP out (New English) which includes previous unreleased acoustic tracks. See alse their album review under

Full review of this album next week after we have given it a good listen over the weekend.
FULL REVIEW NOW AT REVIEWS -> ALBUMS -> 2006
It would appear that the next album by THE FUTUREHEADS which will be out later in the year will be produced by Ben Hillier, who apart from previous work with DOVES and BLUR was also responsible for the recent DEPECHE MODE album.
In January 2006, BECK is set to release a re-mixed version of his album ?Guero? which will include a contribution by BOARDS OF CANADA (who provide a re-mix of ?Broken Drum?) and AIR (for ?Heaven Hammer?), while Scottish art rockers FRANZ FERDINAND have had a similar treatment with the track ?The Fallen? from their last album and it is currently out there as the Justice remix.
THE VERVE: ?Break The Night With Colour? is the new single by former VERVE singer RICHARD ASHCROFT and it is out on 9th January.
His new album ?Keys To The World? follows a few weeks later on Parlophone Records.

RYAN ADAMS: They call it Alt-country (presumably short for Alternative Country & Western?) and apparently very popular in certain parts of the USA and worryingly, presumably due to the likes of MTV, also growing popular in certain parts of The Netherlands too! - Ryan Adams released three albums in 2005 in his attempt to bring his blend of country & western inspired rock and roll to the masses ... three albums too many in our opinion!
THE STROKES: Their new album ?First Impressions of Earth? (Rough Trade) is out now and hopefully an improvement on their rather disappointing 2003 release ?Room on Fire? which to be fair had a lot to live up to as follow up to their excellent debut album ?Is This It? (2001).
Early reports suggest that their 3rd album will bring them back to the fore of the alternative music scene so expect them to feature heavily at the major festivals this summer.
Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn will make his directorial debut with the forthcoming movie ?CONTROL?, which tells the story about Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, and which is based on the book ?Touching From a Distance? by the singers? widow Deborah Curtis. The soundtrack will consist of Joy Division songs along with accompanying music made for the film by the remaining members of the band (New Order).
Dutch Radio: It was no real surprise to find out in December which songs had made Dutch radio station Veronica?s Top 1000 songs ever! (They call this annual radio presentation the ?Top 1000 Allertijden?) and it always comes across like being stuck in a bizarre time warp with the likes of Bon Jovi, Meatloaf and Phil Collins once again dominating the event, along with certain Dutch artists like Anouk and Trijntje Oosterhuis who in all honesty just can?t sing in English, while anything slightly interesting or exciting from the past 10 years was once again virtually non existent. However, it was a surprise to see their show advertised in Dutch music magazine OOR that by all accounts is the nations major source of information when it comes to new music. The funniest part however was what Veronica had placed at the bottom of their advert ? ?80s & 90?s Hits?. Now that just about sums it all up really doesn?t it?!
Anniversaries: Just so that you know, it?s now 30 years ago that punk hit the streets of London, it?s 15 years ago that NIRVANA ?Nevermind? (Geffen), MASSIVE ATTACK ?Blue Lines? (Virgin) and R.E.M. ?Out Of Time? (Warners) were released, 40 years ago that THE BEACH BOYS brought out ?Pet Sounds? (Capitol), 20 years ago that THE SMITHS gave the world ?The Queen Is Dead? (Rough Trade) and a staggering 25 years since DEPECHE MODE released their debut album ?Speak & Spell? (Mute).

2006 - LIVE:
KT TUNSTALL will be doing a gig in Paris on 26th February, ARCTIC MONKEYS hit Cologne (Keulen) on 4th March and VIOLENT FEMMES will be playing a one off gig at London?s Shepherds Bush Empire on Sunday 26th February. EDITORS return to The Netherlands in January/February to play 3 gigs in Eindhoven, Utrecht and Amsterdam but if you haven?t got tickets you?re too late as they have all sold out. WE ARE SCIENTISTS will be providing the guest slot at the KAISER CHIEFS gigs in Paris (28th February) and Amsterdam (1st March), which will give people the opportunity to hear tracks from their debut album ?With Love And Squalor? (Virgin). HEATHER NOVA returns to The Netherlands on 19th March to play a gig in Groningen, while the next London Calling event in Amsterdam will be at the Paradiso on the weekend of 31st March & 1st April. THE BUZZCOCKS have re-formed to do a series of UK gigs in March. The ROCK AM RING Festival in Germany in June has already attracted DEPECHE MODE, KAISER CHIEFS, PLACEBO and FRANZ FERDINAND - More details to follow.
2006 - NEW ALBUMS: Watch out for forthcoming album releases by RADIOHEAD (late 2006), MORRISSEY (March), THE LOVERS (t.b.c.), ARCTIC MONKEYS (January), THE KILLERS (summer), THE FUTUREHEADS (spring), LILIAN HAK (t.b.c), RAZORLIGHT (May) and THE STREETS (April)
Rumors are that the long awaited album by MASSIVE ATTACK will feature collaborations with Beth Orton and Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and is being described as having taken a Goth-Soul direction!
