On Monday 3rd December, THE VERVE are set to re-release their singles collection through Virgin Records that also includes a DVD with all their videos. "This Is Music (The Singles `92 - `98) {CD & DVD}" includes the hits 'Bitter Sweet Symphony', 'History' and 'The Drugs Don't Work'. The band are currently on a sell out tour at various venues across the UK, have a brand new album out early next year, and will be appearing at most of the major festivals in the summer of 2008.

BBC Radio Scotland has turned off the music today (21st November) - The move is to mark No Music Day - the brainchild of musician, writer, artist and former KLF frontman Bill Drummond who is challenging people to consider how they view and use music in their lives. Instead of music, Radio Scotland programmes will include discussions, interviews and a chance to contemplate a world without music. Drummond came up with the idea in 2005 and this year will be the third time he has marked the day.

GOLDFRAPP are set to release their fourth album - "Seventh Tree" (Mute) on 25th February in the UK and it will be out the day after over in North America. The first single to be taken from their new album is A&E which will be released on CD & vinyl on 11th February and available for download from 3rd February 2008.

2008 gigs: SMASHING PUMPKINS are to play a gig on Monday 18th February at Brabanthallen in Den Bosch (NL), HOT CHIP (photo) will be doing a 13 date UK tour in February 2008, THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN will be playing two dates in London on 11th & 12th March, while KT TUNSTALL will be doing an 11 date UK tour during April 2008.

Last Friday (16th November) saw the second show in a brand new series of "Later ... with Jools Holland" on BBC2, and those lucky enough to have tuned in would have seen PJ HARVEY (photo above), accompanied by only a piano, perform two tracks from her critically acclaimed new album "White Chalk". We now hear that PJ is also due to make a live appearance on the next episode of BBC2`s "The Culture Show" - Saturday 24th November at 19:10hrs (20:10hrs NL time) - when she will be interviewed and get to perform her new single 'The Piano', which will then be released as download and on 7” vinyl on 26th November. Also on this next episode of "The Culture Show", as a major exhibition about the BAUHAUS opens at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, the designer Peter Saville (Factory Records, New Order, Pulp, Suede), is featured as he journeys to Dessau, East Germany to discover more about the movement. As Art Director for Factory Records in the 70s/80s, Saville’s startling sleeves for Joy Division and New Order, along with those for Factory Records (photo below), managed to intuitively capture the mood of a new musical wave.

BJORK is to release ’Declare Independence’ as her next single in January (this will be the third single to be taken from her album "Volta") and has also just announced that she will be doing around 8 gigs over in the UK during April and May 2008. The full album review of "Volta" can be found in our ALBUM REVIEWS section (from May 2007).

news from SUNDERLAND ... Both THE FUTUREHEADS (photo above) and FIELD MUSIC (photo below) will be finishing off the year by playing several intimate gigs over in the UK. THE FUTUREHEADS who recently completed recording their as yet untitled 3rd album (see our previous article in NEWS 08-2007) have given us a taster of things to come by posting a brand new song - 'Broke Up The Time' - on their MySpace site. They will be playing gigs at King's College in London on 29th November and then on the 6th and 7th December at the Independent in Sunderland. FIELD MUSIC announced in April that they were taking a break from band commitments. Since then, all three members have started work on ventures of their own at the band's Eight Music studio in Sunderland, and these should see the light of day at some point in 2008. First up will be David's SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE album, scheduled for a 2008 release simultaneously by Memphis Industries in the UK and Ireland and Chicago's legendary Thrill Jockey Records in the US and Europe. FIELD MUSIC will be playing two exclusive gigs on the 17th and 18th December, at the Cluny in Newcastle. Both nights will feature a full Field Music set spanning material from their two and half albums to date, but on top of that, each night will feature a set of music from one of the more recent projects undertaken by the band's individual members.

KT TUNSTALL recently did a live session for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, which included her single 'Hold On' and a cover of Bloc Party's 'The Prayer'. Her second album "Drastic Fantastic" (Relentless / Virgin / EMI) was released in September - The full review from this album can be found in our ALBUM REVIEWS section (from 12th September). RADIOHEAD will release a CD and vinyl version of their latest album "In Rainbows" on 31st December on the XL Recordings label (although this excludes North America for which they have still to agree a deal), while ’Jigsaw Falling Into Place’ will be released as a single on 14th January. They will also be out on tour during 2008 to promote the album. Meanwhile, EMI (their former record company) have decided to release a Radiohead box-set in time for Christmas which will include all the albums (minus "In Rainbows") and reports suggest that this was done without any input from the band themselves. Make of that what you will ...
