FOR TIPS ON RECENT ALBUM RELEASES GO TO
OCTOBER - 2008

It has been about a year since ENTER SHIKARI released a limited edition mini-album "The Zone" (Ambush Reality) which included all their B-sides. Now we hear that they have a new single - We Can Breathe In Space - out and are due to return to the Benelux region for a few gigs early next year. So make a note of these dates in your agenda: On Friday 23rd January they will play the Melkweg in Amsterdam and on Sunday 25th January at the AB in Brussels (B) - You can listen to selected songs from the band by going through AAPA MySpace to their own site.
OASIS are one of the bands appearing live in concert this coming weekend (24th to 26th October) on BBC2 as part of the Electric Proms Sessions - Other bands who will be broadcasted live include THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS and GOLDFRAPP. See BBC TV listings for more detailed info at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/electricproms/

OASIS - Tickets went on sale today (24th October) for their stadium/outdoor gigs next summer over in the UK, which includes one at Edinburgh Murrayfield, two hometown dates in Manchester`s Heaton Park, two at London`s Wembley Stadium, and for the North of England they have chosen the magnificant SOL stadium in Sunderland (photo). Their brand new album "Dig Out Your Soul" (see Dutch language review below) is out now. As previously reported back in June (see NEWS 06 - 2008), OASIS had been due to play a gig this autumn over here in The Netherlands but this ended up not going ahead and they are now to play the HMH in Amsterdam on 21st January 2009 for Mojo Concerts instead.

"the truth is stranger than fiction" ... As previously reported back in July, GRACE JONES is due to release her brand new album "Hurricane" (Wall of Sound / PIAS), her first in almost twenty years, on Monday 3rd November. The song 'William`s Blood' is now expected to be released at the end of November or early December as the next single to be taken from this album.

It is now almost 30 years ago since DAVID BYRNE (Talking Heads) and BRIAN ENO (Roxy Music) released their groundbreaking album "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" (1981 - Sire Records) - They have since teamed up again to record a new album entitled "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" (released August 2008 - go to: http://www.everythingthathappens.com/ for more info) - In 2009, David Byrne will be out on a European Tour titled "David Byrne, Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno", which apart from playing tracks from both albums will also be including songs from several Talking Heads albums produced by Eno. There will be two dates in the Benelux region: On 10th March at the Koningin Elisabethzaal (QEH) in Antwerp (B) and then on 24th March at the MC Vredenburg in Utrecht. You can listen to selected songs by going through AAPA MySpace to David`s own site.

The EFFENAAR in Eindhoven: Saturday 15th November 2008 is going to be the first indie disco (indie club night) by the Effenaar in Eindhoven, where they describe this night as "Indie Disco is dé stapavond voor iedere liefhebber van alternatieve en dansbare gitaarrock!" (Indie Disco is the club night for every fan of alternative and danceable indie rock!) - which is a bit strange, because back in the spring of 1994 it was actually the Effenaar themselves who banned all their staff and volunteers (which numbered about 450 in those days) from attending an indie bar just up the road on the Dommelstraat called The Independent (which was a newly opened unsubsidised indie bar/disco/cafe) because they didn`t want any competition for their own venue! In effect it meant that The Effenaar, which was heavily subsidised by the council, could maintain their monopoly of the alternative music market in and around Eindhoven (even though from what we remember at the time, apart from the occasional gig, their playlist was more Dutch Top 40 chart music and the occasional REM or U2 song rather than being actual indie music) - But it also meant that without paying customers (450 staff and all their friends was a lot of people from that scene in a town that size), The Independent closed its doors in November 1994 and those running the Effenaar most likely breathed a sigh of relief before they returned to the council for yet another handout from the central art fund. And so now with their new indie night which starts next month it looks like it has taken them exactly 14 years since the closure of The Independent to finally catch up? - what a right bunch of wankers! The story of THE INDEPENDENT (including original poster from 1994) can be found HERE

RE-RELEASES: As previously mentioned last month in our NEWS section, collectors editions of the first five albums by NEW ORDER when they were signed to Factory Records during the 80`s will be re-released on 2 CD versions - The extra disc comes with extended versions, b-sides and remixes, as well as extensive sleevenotes, including interviews with all four band members. The five albums are "Movement" (1981), "Power Corruption & Lies" (1983), "Low Life" (1985), "Brotherhood" (1986) and "Technique" (1989). Here are the album sleeves to help you track them down in your local record shop.

AIMEE MANN has delivered one of the best albums of the year so far with "@#%&*! Smilers" (Super Ego Records), and she is about to go out on tour across Europe which includes a gig at Amsterdam Melkweg on 20th October and one in Belgium at the AB in Brussels on 1st November - we strongly suggest you get yourself along to one of her gigs! You can now see a live studio performance by Aimee with the album track 'Thirty One Today' at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xgKUtUQzIY while the video for recent single 'Freeway' can be viewed at: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=TQF5CXV9cos - See also the previous article about Aimee (with link to recent interview) under NEWS 07 - 2008 - You can see the full list of tour dates and also listen to selected songs by going through AAPA MySpace to her own site.

Las Vegas band THE KILLERS who shot to the top of the alternative music charts back in 2005 with their debut album "Hot Fuss" will be releasing their third studio album "Day & Age" (Mercury / Island) on 24th November and it will be preceded by the single 'Human'. The album is the follow-up to "Sam's Town" from 2006, while in 2007 they also released "Sawdust", and as both these albums were largely disappointing, time will tell if they can recreate the original buzz from their debut again? - Our review of "Sam's Town" from October 2006 can be found in our ALBUM REVIEWS 2006 section.
