new rave rock, new rave punk, or just "new rave"... From the UK (Hot Chip, Klaxons, Shit Disco, etc) to Scandanavia (Datarock), and then all off on an assault across the Atlantic, this year we have seen a bunch of new bands who have been mixing Rock, Punk and Pop influences with the rave culture and music of the early 90`s with the use of conventional instruments and their keyboards and laptops. That said, here in Holland we also have a bunch of new bands out there who have well and truly missed the boat and in 2006 just aren`t, er ... "new" anymore! - One exception however appears to be ABOUT who are based in Amsterdam (check out their MySpace site at: http://www.myspace.com/aboutabout) who have tried something different and who don`t think "new" is simply trying to copy the Moloko or Massive Attack sound of the 90`s when it is 2006! - ABOUT have been described by Q Magazine as having “An exhilarating collision of electronic noise and punk programming" while the US based Pitchfork magazine recently reported “If only more groups could so skillfully unleash the hidden rock-out potential of the laptop”.
Their debut album "Bongo" is out now on the Cock Rock Disco label.
