To celebrate their 40th anniversary, BBC Radio 1 have asked 40 of today's acts to cover 40 tracks from each year of its history. This album, "RADIO 1 ESTABLISHED 1967" {2CD} (UMTV / Universal) is the result and is due out on Monday 1st October. Some of the artists include Klaxons, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, KT Tunstall, The View, Editors & The Fratellis who are all covering previous chart hits to commemorate BBC Radio 1 being on air for 40 years.

iLiKETRAiNS who have just released 'The Deception' (Beggars Banquet) as a single, have also announced live dates in the Benelux region during November. As previously reported (see feature in 08-2007) their new album "Elegies To Lessons Learnt" is set for release on 1st October. Go to our GIG LISTINGS section for more info on the dates & venues.

MARC BOLAN & T.REX - To mark the 30th anniversary of Marc Bolan`s death, who died 30 years ago today in a car crash (16th September), Universal have just released a "Greatest Hits" collection on 2 CDs, featuring a total of 40 tracks, and is highly recommended. KLAXONS ended up winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize last night (4th September) with their debut album "Myths Of The Near Future" (Polydor) but condolences also have to go out to BAT FOR LASHES who from what we gather only just missed out with their album "Fur And Gold (Echo) - It has to be said that both of them delivered excellent debut albums, and as a result of this event both bands will become even bigger names in the music scene for years to come. Back in July, AAPA tipped either Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys or Bat For Lashes to win from the 12 albums nominated! - see previous article in our NEWS section from: 07-2007 - We also reviewed the BFL album back in 2006 and you can find it - > HERE by scrolling down to 20th October 2006.
The full list of nominees for best album were:
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare, Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford - Basquiat Strings, Bat For Lashes - Fur and Gold, Dizzee Rascal - Maths and English, Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future, Maps - We Can Create, New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom, Fionn Regan - The End of History, Jamie T - Panic Prevention, The View - Hats Off to the Buskers, Amy Winehouse - Back To Black, & The Young Knives - Voices of Animals and Men
After the award was announced, Klaxons singer Jamie Reynolds paid tribute to Bat For Lashes (the pre-award red hot favourites!) and then went onto say that they deserved to beat Winehouse because she made a "retro record and we've made the most forward-thinking record".

It would appear that the Factory Records event that had been scheduled at the Melkweg in Amsterdam on 16th December has now been cancelled. The Melkweg have not given us a reason. Refunds can be obtained from the venue or point of sale.

CANDIE PAYNE will be releasing 'One More Chance' as a new single on Monday (3rd Sept) - it is taken from her critically acclaimed debut album "I Wish I Could Have Loved You More" (Deltasonic) and will be available on CD and 7" vinyl. You can find out more about Candie in our NEW BANDS section when we featured her as one to watch back in February 2007. The full album review from May 2007 can be found - > HERE
