AUGUST - 2008

This coming Saturday (30th August), the BBC will be showing the final part to their 3-part music documentary Pop Britannia on BBC 2 from 10:10pm to 11:10pm (23:10 to 00:10 hours NL time) which tells the story of pop and its place in British culture since the 1950s. For the last 30 years, British pop has been a constant struggle between the forces of art and commerce. In the early 80s a generation of punk-inspired art students such as THE HUMAN LEAGUE and ABC took British pop music to the top of the world's charts ... Since then our art school dreamers continue to come up with new and idealistic expressions with music from BLUR in the 90`s to FRANZ FERDINAND (photo) in the 00`s. More info on the series can also be found on their website at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/popbritannia/

FIELD MUSIC are a three-piece band from Sunderland consisting of the brothers David and Peter Brewis and Andrew Moore, who released two critically acclaimed albums (in 2005 and 2007) and then decided to take time out to concentrate on their solo projects. Earlier this year David, with SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE, released the album "Sea From Shore" and had songs included in our Monthly Play List for March and April, while his brother Peter, as THE WEEK THAT WAS, had one included in our Play List for this month (August) and has just released an album that has a cinematic quality not immediately obvious in Field Music's previous recordings, and should appeal to fans of Roxy Music, Japan and Kate Bush. The record features contributions from Peter's Field Music colleagues, Andrew Moore and David Brewis, along with Pete Gofton on vibraphone, singing by Jennie Redmond, John Beattie on cornet and Laura Cullen on flute, as well as percussive and vocal duties from This Ain't Vegas' Jordan Hill and Richard Amundsen. The strings were played by Emma Fisk and Peter Richardson (veterans of previous Field Music albums) and Pauline Brandon. The success of the album, however, pivots around Peter's deftness and ingenuity as producer, engineer, writer, instrumentalist and singer - it's hard to think of even a handful of artists who would attempt to harness such a sprawl of ideas, let alone who could pull off such a project so astutely. The album was released through the indie label Memphis Industries (and PIAS in the Benelux region) on 18th August 2008. The self titled debut album by FIELD MUSIC was reviewed by us in March 2006, while a full review of their album "Tones of Town" (Memphis Industries / V2) from February 2007 can be found under ALBUM REVIEWS - You can also listen to selected songs by going through AAPA MySpace to their own sites.
