FOR TIPS ON RECENT ALBUM RELEASES GO TO
JULY - 2008

TORI AMOS has just released the 480-page collection 'Comic Book Tattoo' (see photo for cover) consisting entirely of stories and art inspired by her music, featuring contributions from more than 80 graphic artists and writers. PURESSENCE have released 'Don't Know Any Better' as a single. The song is taken from their album "Don't Forget To Remember" (Reaction) which came out last year and both are now available to purchase online through Townsend Records. James and Lowell from Puressence are playing an acoustic set at The Retro Bar in Manchester on Saturday 9th August, and then on 18th October they play with a full band at Manchester Academy along with 90`s indie band MARION as their special guests.

The shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize has just been announced, with albums by RADIOHEAD, The Last Shadow Puppets (photo), Elbow and Laura Marling being amongst the twelve nominations. Last year it was KLAXONS who eventually beat Arctic Monkeys (who won it with their debut album back in 2006), and pre-event favorites' BAT FOR LASHES to win the prestigious prize (see previous article under NEWS 07 - 2007) - This years annual event will take place in London on 4th September.

THE TING TINGS have just released 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' as their next single. It is the third single to be taken from their debut album "We Started Nothing" (Columbia Records). The band are set to appear at most major festivals across Europe this summer. See also our previous article about them from May 2008 under NEWS 05 - 2008

BEST ALBUMS OF THE EARLY 90`s: It has now been over ten years since they were first released ... we asked around to see which albums have stood the test of time? - The end result has thrown up a few surprises so we decided to publish our Top 10 albums from each year of the 90`s!

GRACE JONES is back! - The avant-garde pop icon of the late '70s and '80s recently signed with Wall of Sound to release her first new album in almost twenty years. Grace recently played at the Massive Attack-curated Meltdown Festival in London. Her new album is entitled "Hurricane", and it will be released on Monday 27th October. It is also hard to believe that is now 27 years since she released her groundbreaking album "Nightclubbing" (Island) - An album that we made our 1981 - ALBUM OF THE YEAR - See also our previous article from 2006 about a Digitally Re-mastered Double CD "The Grace Jones Story" with 24 tracks under NEWS 08 - 2006

As previously reported back in June, OASIS will release their first album in over three years when "Dig Out Your Soul" (Big Brother / Sony) hits the shops on 6th October. The artwork for the album has now been made available (photo) and it will be preceded by the single 'The Shock Of The Lightning' which is out a week earlier on 29th September.
   
NEW ALBUMS: On Monday 4th August, Mercury Records will be releasing two debut albums: NOAH & THE WHALE with "Peaceful The World Lays Me Down" and JOE LEAN & JING JANG JONG with their self titled debut album, while on Monday 18th August, THE VERVE finally return with their brand new album "Forth" (Parlophone), and a week later on 25th August, THE AUTOMATIC get to release their second album "This Is A Fix" (B-Unique / Columbia) which will be preceded a week earlier by the single 'Steve McQueen'.
 
NEW ORDER have just released a live DVD: "NEW ORDER - Live in Glasgow" {DVD + bonus CD} and it is out through Warner Vision.

NEW ALBUMS: On Monday 7th July, BECK is back with the album "Modern Guilt" (XL), and as previously mentioned (see full article under NEWS 06 - 2008), the 2 CD compilation album "Independents Day: ID08" is available from all good record shops which features exclusive tracks from the likes of Rodrigo y Gabriela, The Futureheads, Infadels and The Prodigy. Then on Monday 21st July, PRIMAL SCREAM return with a brand new album entitled "Beautiful Future" (Atlantic) and CSS get to release their second album "Donkey" (Sub Pop).

MANCHESTER - Apart from forthcoming new albums from OASIS and THE VERVE (see previous articles under NEWS 06 - 2008), recent debut albums from THE TING TINGS, THE COURTEENERS, THE BEEP SEALS and THE WHIP, along with new albums from the likes of JAMES, THE CHARLATANS (even though most of them originally hail from the Midlands), THE FALL, TOM HINGLEY (from INSPIRAL CARPETS) and ELBOW, it looks like DOVES (photo) are also preparing to release an as yet untitled new album (which will be their fourth) and the band are currently mixing tracks in the studio with their album hopefully expected to be released before the end of the year. It also looks like the turnout of new material from Manchester this year is more than from most countries!!

After initially refusing to allow their music to be made available through iTunes, RADIOHEAD are now to release a live (video) version of "In Rainbows" through iTunes. The band, who are set to play an outdoor event at the Westerpark in Amsterdam next week, play almost the entire album (with ‘Faust Arp‘ and ‘Jigsaw Falling into Place‘ replaced by ‘Bangers + Mash‘ and ‘Go Slowly‘) and is entitled "RADIOHEAD ‘IN RAINBOWS’ LIVE FROM THE BASEMENT" - The full track listing of video performances is: Body snatchers, House of Cards, Nude, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, 15 Step, Reckoner, Go Slowly, Videotape, Bangers ‘n’ Mash, All I Need.
