2008 - the year so far ...

JUNE - 2008

Last Monday (23rd June), FIVE O`CLOCK HEROES released their new single 'Who' (with guest vocals by Agyness Deyn) and it has been receiving mixed reviews. One thing that is for sure, and that is that Agyness Deyn`s voice sounds miles better than Kate Moss`s warbles with the overrated Babyshambles a few years ago! - We included 'Who' in our play list for June and believe that time will tell whether it was worthy of such an inclusion? See also the previous article about Agyness under NEWS 05 - 2008

The new album from OASIS will be called "Dig Out Your Soul" and is set for a 6th October release date. The band from Manchester are to tour North America during the summer and the album will be preceded by the single ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’ which will be out on 29th September. We also suggest that you keep your eyes peeled for a possible live date in The Netherlands (which won't be in Amsterdam) before the year is out.

EMI are now set to re-release the 1998 critically acclaimed DAVID MCALMONT album "A Little Communication" (originally released on Hut Records) - David has previously been described as having one of the greatest voices on the planet, and is probably best remembered by indie music fans in the mid 90`s for his collaboration with Bernard Butler (Suede), and for his brilliant version of the James Bond theme 'Diamonds Are Forever' on the David Arnold compilation album "Shaken And Stirred" (1997 - East West Records). To coincide with this release, David is also performing the complete album live as part of the LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL on the 16th November. You can already have a listen to selected tracks by going to his MySpace page at: http://www.myspace.com/mcalmont - You can find out more about McAlmont & Butler by going to: http://www.mcalmontandbutler.com/

Forget about all the talk about the new COLDPLAY album, because TRAVIS are back with a brand new EP while their next album is expected to be released during the Autumn of this year - The EP entitled "J. Smith" will be sold as a 10" vinyl single and as download, featuring the song 'J. Smith' - which serves as the title track from the forthcoming album "Ode To J. Smith", as well as b-sides 'Get Up' and 'Sarah'. The title track of the EP was produced by Emery Dobyns (Antony & The Johnsons, Patti Smith), will be limited to 1000 copies on vinyl and is out on 30th June.

As previously mentioned, BAT FOR LASHES are currently out touring across Europe as special guests with RADIOHEAD and we are receiving reports that their live performances are brilliant! - They are both due to appear in the Westerpark in Amsterdam on 1st July. All we can say is, make sure you all get there early!! - See previous article about them in our NEWS 04 - 2008 section from April. And while we are on this 80`s theme (see article below about the new album by ABC), it looks like SIMPLE MINDS are about to release a box set later this month covering their music from 1979 to 1992 entitled "Themes" (Virgin Records). SIMPLE MINDS rose from the ashes of the punk scene in the 70`s, experimented with art rock and electro-dance rhythms, and by the mid-'80s they achieved worldwide success. The box set (with 5 discs, or 25 discs?!? depending on which press release you believe) is expected to be out in the shops on Monday 23rd June.

Anyone remember ABC ? - Well for those who don't, back in the early 1980`s, the Sheffield bands debut album "The Lexicon Of Love" (Mercury Records) became one of the best albums released during the entire New Romantics period - In fact it was that good it became our Best Album of the Year for 1982 - We have only just discovered that singer Martyn Fry & Co have recently released a brand new ABC album! - "Traffic" (Borough Music) came out on 28th April and on giving it a listen it has to be said that it is really good!

AIMEE MANN who shot to prominence back in 1999 with her Academy Award nominated soundtrack for the film MAGNOLIA (for which the screenplay for the film was actually written around her songs) has just released a brand new album with the unusual title of "@#%&*! Smilers" (ADA / Super Ego Records) which if you look at the artwork could easily be mistaken for Crazy Smilers? Once again Aimee shows that apart from great songs, she has an incredible voice. This is her seventh solo album and available from all good independent record shops. More info can be found at: www.aimeemann.com - You can also see Aimee Mann's performance of current single 'Freeway' on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno by going to: http://youtube. com/watch?v=fc3J2-DPJ_Q

While many expected FRANZ FERDINAND to release a new album this year, we understand that they will now not be releasing their as yet untitled third album until early 2009. Frontman Alex Kapronas told BBC 6Music that the band still had "quite a bit of mixing" still left to do. Franz Ferdinand will be playing a tour of intimate venues over in the UK later this month, along with some festivals during the summer where they should air some of their new material.

THE COURTEENERS have a new single out on 23rd June - 'No You Didn't, No You Don't', which was included in the AAPA Monthly Play List back in February 2008, is taken from their critically acclaimed debut album "St. Jude" (Polydor) and is backed by a cover of the JAMES song 'Out To Get You'. The band from Manchester will be appearing at various festivals across Europe during the summer months and have a full UK tour lined up in October. More info about them (from September 2007) can be found in our NEW BANDS section, while the album review (from April 2008) for "St. Jude" is in our REVIEWS section.
