The Maestro ... Maybe an unusual article on an alternative arts website, but due to his influence on all styles of music over the past five decades, news reached us last night (6th March) that the legendary Italian composer ENNIO MORRICONE is currently putting the finishing touches on one, possibly two, new soundtrack(s), both involving big budget films that have seen various delays over recent years. The composer is probably best known for his long collaboration with director Sergio Leone on such films as "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "Once Upon a Time in the West", although since working with Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore on "Cinema Paradiso" in the late 80`s they have since formed a similar partnership with Morricone being responsible for every Tornatore soundtrack, including his Oscar nominated score for "Malena" in 2001. So far he has earned four other Oscar nominations for original music score ("The Mission," "The Untouchables," "Days of Heaven" and "Bugsy"), and should have won the award back in 1985 for his brilliant music score for "Once Upon A Time In America" (only for some idiot at the film company forgetting to officially submit it as a contender!) and went on to receive an honorary Oscar last year (photo) "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music." In 2008, the first score planned for release is for Giuseppe Tornatore`s new film "Leningrad" (a film incidentally that was originally planned to be made by Sergio Leone himself just before his untimely death), while there are also increasing rumors that he is also to provide the music score for Brian De Palma`s new film "The Untouchables: Capone Rising" (which is a prequel to De Palma`s earlier film "The Untouchables" from 1987) and tells the story of Al Capone, his arrival in Chicago and his dealings with cop Jimmy Malone, which was portrayed by Sean Connery in the original and to be a role for Gerard Butler ("300") in 2008. With two brand new soundtracks, it looks like Ennio Morricone is set to have another impressive year ahead. Previous info on the maestro can be found in our NEWS 02-2007 section (from February 2007) or in an article from 2005 by AAPA which can be found - > HERE
