2006 - the year so far ...

MAART - 2006 // MARCH - 2006

In the build up to the next LONDON CALLING event at the Amsterdam Paradiso this weekend, we can tell you that several of the bands also appeared at the annual SXSW (South by SouthWest) in Texas, USA. WE START FIRES and DIRTY PRETTY THINGS (both playing in the Paradiso on the friday night along with THE FUTUREHEADS) and THE CINEMATICS who are due to play on the saturday were all appearing at SXSW with the likes of MORRISSEY, THE STROKES and ARCTIC MONKEYS who were all promoting their new albums (see previous NEWS and REVIEWS for more info). DIRTY PRETTY THINGS are a band who have the 3 other original members of THE LIBERTINES and hopefully a lot more interesting than BABYSHAMBLES!

Dutch radio station Kink FM and Steamin?Soundworks will release a compilation album: ?X-Rated: The DARK Files? in April. Back in 2002 they released the first volume in the X-Rated series entitled ?X-Rated: The Electronic Files?, focusing on electronic music. ?X-Rated: The DARK Files? contains 11 exclusive and rare tracks. Artists include COIL, KaH, and SCANNER with the album being dedicated to the late Jhonn Balance of COIL. Although we found the album for the most part disappointing a more positive Dutch language review by Plato (independent chain) can be found at: http://www.platomania.nl/maniagenre.asp?cdid=20056&platomanianr=215

London Calling (Amsterdam Paradiso ? 31st March & 1st April)
THE FUTUREHEADS are the main attraction at the next LONDON CALLING event, which gives people in Holland the chance to see upcoming or recently established British bands, who for the most part are making their first live appearances over here. The next event also includes gigs by MYSTERY JETS, THE CINEMATICS (see previous info about this Scottish band under our LATEST NEWS section), WE START FIRES, THE NOISETTES & DIRTY PRETTY THINGS.

Today (13th March) sees the release of a lot of new albums and singles: MASSIVE ATTACK have a brand new single out called "Live With Me" (Virgin Records), while NINE BLACK ALPS release "Glitter Gulch" (Island Records). DEPECHE MODE have announced that they have a brand new single out the day after they play their sell out gig at the Rotterdam Ahoy on Sunday 26th March - "suffer well" will be the third song to be taken from their album "Playing the Angel" (Mute Records) - The video for the single has been made by Dutch artist and photographer ANTON CORBIJN. We have to admit to being a bit surprised by this choice of single, and can only conclude that they must be keeping the dark ballad "nothing`s impossible" or better still the stomping "Lilian" in reserve? - DM`s "Playing the Angel" was AAPA`s album of the year for 2005. Go to MUSIC -> "2005 ... a year of music" for full list of nominations and winners.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com MORRISSEY has finally decided to return to The Netherlands and is set to play one gig to coincide with the release of his brand new album "Ringleader of the Tormentors" which is out on 3rd April. The venue is the HMH in Amsterdam and the date for your calenders is 10th April. And although not confirmed yet it is rumoured that the former lead singer of THE SMITHS is also set to appear at PinkPop 2006!

THE FUTUREHEADS
Their new album "News And Tributes" which has been produced by Ben Hillier is set for a release on 22nd May and will be preceded by the single "Skip To The End" on 8th May.
The album was recorded in just under 2 months at a deserted studio on the Yorkshire Moors.
